A few small habits keep ceramic and solid wood at their best for decades.

Daily care
Wipe surfaces with a soft, damp cloth. Skip abrasive cleaners and scouring pads — they are not needed and they harm the finish.

Spills
Ceramic is non-porous and forgiving. Wood is not — wipe spills as they happen, especially red wine, oil and citrus.

Heat
Always use trivets under hot pans. Ceramic resists heat well; matte wood finishes do not, and a mark tends to stay.

Light and time
Solid wood patinates beautifully with daylight. Rotate centrepieces occasionally so the surface ages evenly.
